Technical SEO for Dental Websites

The checks and fixes that let search engines and AI crawlers reach, read, render, and trust your pages: crawl access, indexing, speed, mobile usability, redirects, and structured data, verified on the live site and reported with evidence.

If machines cannot access the website, they cannot understand it

Content and reviews do not matter if Google cannot index the page, if the mobile version takes six seconds to load, if an old redirect chain loses half the link value, or if the structured data describes a provider who left in 2022. Technical SEO is the foundation under everything else we do, and it is checked against the live site, never assumed from source code.

Who this is for

  • Practices whose content is good but whose site has quietly stopped being indexed properly.
  • Practices with a slow mobile site, accidental noindex tags, or broken redirects from a previous design.
  • Practices with markup that invents fields or uses deprecated types.
  • Practices whose security or CDN rules block legitimate crawlers.

What we find most often

  • Noindex left on from a staging site.
  • Redirect chains and soft 404s from an old URL structure.
  • Hero images of several megabytes and unused scripts from abandoned plugins.
  • Three plugins each emitting conflicting structured data.
  • Firewall rules that return errors to Bingbot or OAI-SearchBot.
  • Important pages with no internal links pointing at them.

Technical signals that decide whether you can be found at all

Both traditional search and AI systems depend on the same access layer.

What a crawler needs

  • A 200 status and an indexable canonical
  • Server-rendered HTML, not script-only content
  • A sitemap that lists the right pages
  • Fast rendering on mobile
  • Internal links to every important page

What breaks it

  • "Why is our implant page not in Google at all?"
  • "Why does the mobile site feel slow?"
  • "Why does ChatGPT say we are closed?"
  • "Why does the rich-result test show errors?"

Usually a crawl, render, redirect, or markup fault, found and fixed here.

Google states no special AI file is required for its generative features. Access, speed, and valid HTML are what matter.

What the technical work includes

Every check is run against the live site and reported with the URLs, tools, and results.

Crawl and index

Robots directives, status codes, canonicals, sitemaps, soft 404s, orphaned pages, and accidental noindex, with intentional exclusions kept out of the sitemap.

Performance

Core Web Vitals in field and lab data, oversized images, unused scripts, excessive DOM and CSS, font loading, and layout shift, fixed without breaking forms or tracking. Critical hero images are not lazy-loaded to satisfy a rule.

Mobile usability

Tap targets, overflow, sticky-element overlap, heading wraps, and form behavior on real devices at several widths.

Redirects and migration

Old URLs mapped and tested, chains removed, HTTPS and preferred host enforced.

Structured data

Plugin, theme, and custom markup audited; valid Organization, Dentist, provider, location, and service entities with stable IDs and no invented fields or deprecated types. Rich-result eligibility checked separately from vocabulary validity.

Crawler access

CDN, firewall, and security rules checked for Googlebot, Bingbot, and the AI crawlers you allow, verified with official methods rather than a spoofed user-agent, without disabling protections.

The technical audit checklist we run on every dental site

Here is the full list, so you can see exactly what is checked and compare it with what you have been told before. Each item is tested on the live site with the URL, tool, and result recorded.

  • Access: robots.txt, meta robots, X-Robots headers, HTTP status codes, HTTPS and preferred-host redirects, CDN and firewall responses to Googlebot, Bingbot, and allowed AI crawlers.
  • Indexing: canonical tags and conflicts, sitemap contents versus indexable pages, Search Console coverage, soft 404s, duplicate pages, staging leaks.
  • Rendering: server-rendered HTML for key content, JavaScript dependency, hidden content in sliders and tabs.
  • Performance: field Core Web Vitals, lab metrics, image sizes and formats, script and CSS weight, font loading, layout shift, caching.
  • Mobile: viewport, tap targets, overflow, sticky overlap, heading wraps, form usability at several widths.
  • Links: broken internal and external links, redirect chains, orphaned pages, breadcrumb and navigation structure.
  • Structured data: every emitter audited, vocabulary validated, property applicability checked, rich-result eligibility checked separately, conflicts removed.
  • Security: HTTPS, mixed content, exposed admin paths, outdated plugins, with protections kept on.
  • Tracking: analytics and tags firing correctly with no personal data in URLs or events.

The report marks each finding as observed, inferred, proposed, or not verified. A failed fetch or an empty site-search result is not reported as an outage.

From indexed to understood to trusted

Reachable → Rendered → Indexed → Fast on mobile → Correctly linked → Accurately marked up → Understood as the right practice → Cited

Technical SEO covers the first six. Content and reputation cover the last two. None of it works without the first.

Symptoms of technical problems, and what we fix in the first two weeks

Technical faults rarely announce themselves. These are the symptoms practice owners notice, what usually causes them, and what a first technical sprint fixes.

What owners notice

  • The practice does not appear for its own name, or a competitor does.
  • A treatment page you wrote months ago still is not in Google.
  • The site feels slow on a phone even though a tool says it is fast.
  • Google reports errors you do not understand.
  • An assistant quotes an old address or a dentist who left.
  • Traffic dropped after a redesign or a plugin update.

What the first sprint fixes

  • Anything blocking indexing: noindex, canonical errors, blocked resources.
  • Broken redirects and chains from old URLs.
  • Oversized images and unused scripts hurting mobile speed.
  • Conflicting or invalid structured data, replaced with valid entities.
  • Crawler access errors at the CDN or firewall, without disabling protection.
  • A clean sitemap and verified Search Console with the right pages.

How we measure technical SEO

Lab and field data reported separately, always.

  • Index coverage in Search Console: valid, excluded, and error pages before and after.
  • Core Web Vitals at the 75th percentile where field data exists: LCP 2.5 s, INP 200 ms, CLS 0.1.
  • Structured data validation results and rich-result eligibility.
  • Error counts: redirects, 404s, soft 404s, canonical conflicts, before and after.
  • Crawler access verification per bot.

A perfect lab score is not proof of passing field metrics, and a new or low-traffic site may have no field data. We say which is which and we do not promise a permanent 100.

How a technical engagement unfolds

Step 1

Crawl and baseline

Full crawl, Search Console review, performance measurement, markup audit, and crawler access checks.

Step 2

Prioritize

Issues ranked by impact: anything blocking indexing first, then speed, then markup and links.

Step 3

Fix

Changes made in batches with a backup, caches cleared carefully, forms and tracking re-tested.

Step 4

Verify

Re-crawl, re-measure, and report with the before and after evidence.

Questions a practice owner asks that are technical underneath

How these translate into checks we run.

"Why does our site not show up for our own name?"

Usually an indexing block or a canonical pointing elsewhere, sometimes a brand-new domain that has not been crawled, occasionally a security rule returning errors to Googlebot. We check status, robots, canonical, and sitemap for the homepage first, then Search Console coverage, and report exactly what we found.

"The site scores 100 on a speed tool. Why is it still slow on my phone?"

Lab scores and field data measure different things. A tool runs one simulated load on a fast connection; real patients load the page on a mid-range phone on a weak signal. We measure real-user Core Web Vitals at the 75th percentile where they exist and fix what they show, typically image weight, scripts from abandoned plugins, and font loading.

"Google says our FAQ markup has errors."

Google retired FAQ rich results in 2026, so eligibility messages about FAQ markup are expected and not a defect. We check vocabulary validity separately with the Schema.org validator, keep helpful visible Q&A on the page, and remove any markup that conflicts with another emitter.

"ChatGPT says we are at the old address."

A stale source somewhere: old markup, a directory listing, a cached page, or a profile nobody updated. We find the origin rather than guessing, correct it there, and re-test the assistant with the same prompt so the fix is observed rather than assumed.

"Our old site had hundreds of pages. Do we redirect them all?"

Pages with traffic or links are mapped individually to their best new equivalent; the rest are redirected sensibly by section. We test the whole map before and after launch, remove chains and loops, and keep the map as documentation.

"Can we block AI from training on our content but still appear in AI search?"

For ChatGPT, OAI-SearchBot access for search discovery is separate from GPTBot training preferences, and we configure each according to your choice. Google controls for Search and for other Gemini uses are checked separately rather than assuming one switch governs everything, and we verify the result with official methods.

Technical SEO FAQs for practice owners

What practice owners ask us about the technical side.

1. What are the five technical and conversion checks you run?

Crawl and index access, mobile usability and performance, working forms and consultation paths, consistent business and location information, and accurate structured data, each tested on the live site with synthetic data and recorded results.

2. Do we need FAQ schema?

Google retired FAQ rich results in 2026. Helpful visible Q&A still matters; the markup is optional and we never claim it guarantees anything.

3. Should our schema use DentalBusiness?

No. DentalBusiness is not a defined Schema.org type. A dental practice uses Dentist where appropriate. ProfessionalService is deprecated and we avoid it in new markup.

4. Will you disable our security plugin to improve speed?

No. We tune, we do not disable protections or unrelated functionality to move a score.

5. Do we need an llms.txt file?

It does not improve Google Search visibility. We can maintain one for a system that reads it, but it is not a ranking or citation mechanism.

6. How do you verify crawler access?

With official verification methods for each bot and with server logs where available. A spoofed user-agent test alone proves nothing.

7. Can technical fixes break our forms or tracking?

They can if done carelessly. We re-test forms, calls, and tags after every batch and keep a backup to revert to.

8. What does a technical audit cost?

A standalone audit and fix is quoted as a fixed project; technical work is also included in every Dental SEO engagement.

9. Our hosting is slow. Can technical SEO fix that?

Partly. We reduce what the page asks the server to do, but if the hosting itself is the bottleneck we say so and recommend a move, with a migration plan.

10. Do you handle site migrations?

Yes, with a full URL map, redirects tested before and after, and indexing and rankings monitored through the change.

11. What about Core Web Vitals for a brand-new site?

A new site has no field data yet. We optimize lab metrics, launch, and report field data as it accumulates, without claiming a pass we cannot see.

12. How often should a technical check be repeated?

Quarterly for most practices, and after any plugin, theme, or hosting change. Problems appear quietly and cost patients before anyone notices.
